Prepare for a Successful Advising Session
Be Early and Be Thoughtful
- Look Up Your Advisor (Located on your Navigate Home Page, bottom right hand side)
- Set up an Advising Appointment, Contact Us on Chat, or Email Us: Academic Advising
Be Prepared
- Check if you have a hold. Holds are often intended to alert you to a matter that requires your immediate attention and resolution.
- Therefore, before you register for the following term, you are encouraged to check if you have a hold.
- How do you know if you have a hold? (Log into myNECC, click My Information, View My Restrictions/Holds)
- Know what courses are required for your program of study
- Use Degree Works to know what classes you have remaining in your program
- Find your course sequence (what order you should take your classes in) by going to your Academic Center website and looking at your major’s Pathway: Academic Centers
- You can also look at the Academic Catalog online.
- You can then build your plan in Navigate under Academic Plan: Navigate FAQs
- Once you have an idea of what classes you would like to take for classes you can look them up in your Self-Service-Banner (SSB). (Student Services tab, Registration, Look up Classes)
- More detailed registration instructions can be found on the Academic Advising page
- Please be sure to look at the dates the courses are being offered: Is it a 1 month, 6 week, 8 week or 16 week class
- Write down the CRN#’s and class titles for the classes you want to sign up for—write down alternate classes that you would like just in case yours are unavailable.
- Write Down and Ask Your Questions. As you review your degree evaluation and prepare a couple of schedule options, you are bound to have a few questions.
- You are strongly encouraged to come with questions regarding your program of study, academic policies, and degree requirements. Do the work to ensure you stay on track to graduate.
Be Informed
- Know important deadlines and dates. The Academic Calendar lists important semester dates and deadlines (e.g., first and last day of classes, last day to drop or add a class, last day to request a withdrawal), holiday breaks, and the semester exam period).
- View the college catalog.
