Increase Your Global Awareness
Are you interested in other cultures? Do you like to travel and see new places and have new experiences? Do you want to gain an edge in the job market when you graduate by increasing your global awareness? Then you will benefit from NECC’s International Studies opportunities.
You can take advantage of short course opportunities to visit another country, study abroad for a semester, or increase your global awareness right here on campus by participating in One Geographic Region events or becoming a Global Scholar.
Study Abroad
If you are looking to study abroad for the semester then this option is for you. NECC offers short-term and semester abroad programs in over 65 countries. By participating in a study abroad program you will:
- Develop multi-cultural awareness
- Gain unique hands-on perspectives on course topics
- Experience the transformative benefits of travel
- Have fun!
These opportunities are highly individualized, so please contact us at studyabroad@necc.mass.edu for more information.
Short Courses
Short-term study abroad programs allow for the study abroad experience, even if, for financial or family reasons, you cannot study abroad for a full semester. Each trip last between 10- 21 days depending on the location and fulfill a specific program elective depending on the course. The trips are usually planned for the end of May, right after graduation, or over winter break. You will meet on several occasions (usually Saturdays) before departure and at least once on return to the U.S. While abroad, lectures and field trips will occupy part of each day. While students will have some free time to explore on their own, these trips are designed to be academic experiences.
Recent short-term trips have included Ecuador, England, Turkey, Ireland and Italy. The cost runs between $3,500 and $5,500 depending on the length. Financial aid can be used to help support these courses.
Contact us at studyabroad@necc.mass.edu for more information.
One Geographic Region
At NECC, One Geographic Region focuses on one part of the world for a period of two years, with a special focus on the culture, history, politics, economy, and other topics of the region. For the next two years, the One Geographic Region will be the Caribbean and Central America. Join us on the first Fridays of the month for talks, films, and other presentations.
By attending these events, you can earn points toward your Global Scholar designation.
If you have questions about any of our opportunities, contact the Study Abroad team at studyabroad@necc.mass.edu!
International Virtual Exchange
International Virtual Exchange (IVE) has allowed students and faculty to bring the world directly into the classroom while collaborating with peers across the world in an interdisciplinary curriculum.
Frequently Asked Questions on Studying Abroad
Why should I study abroad?
In today’s world, it is not possible to remain geographically isolated. Events in one part of the world are quickly felt in others. Business activities regularly cross international boundaries. Even within our own country, sensitivity to other cultures is needed. The ability to speak a foreign language and to interact knowledgeably and comfortably with people of diverse cultures increases potential job opportunities and enriches one’s life.
Who Can Study Abroad?
Study abroad programs are available to students who have completed at least one semester of study and have earned at a 2.5 or better grade point average. Students in most fields of study will be able to find programs that will allow them to take courses that will fit into their curriculum. The International Studies Office suggests contacting them during your first semester at the college to begin planning.
Where Can I Go?
Students may study in nearly any country travel is considered safe. We have had students participate in programs in the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, England, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Peru, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, Spain and Switzerland.
Do I Need to Speak the Language of the Country I Choose?
Most programs do not require that you speak the language of the country you will be visiting. However, during the time abroad, you may be expected to study the language as well as the history and culture of the country you are visiting.
Where will I live?
Many programs offer several housing options. Frequently, dormitory accommodations are available. In some cases, assistance is provided in locating a nearby apartment that can be shared with other students. Some students choose to stay with a host family in order to increase their interaction with both the language and culture.
What Does It Cost?
The cost varies widely depending on the country and program selected. On average, a student can expect to pay approximately $7000-$15,000 for a semester abroad option. Program price varies on location, duration, and type of learning done overseas. A quick visit to the International Studies Office will help you determine what your dream destination might cost.
If you are interested in our Short Course travel options, the cost of the trip is generally between $3,500 and $5,500.
Is Financial Aid Available?
Students who qualify for financial aid may receive funding while studying abroad. It is important to contact the Financial Aid Office early in order to determine the extent of the grant and to insure that all of the necessary paperwork is in order. When you begin your planning with the International Studies Office we will help you create a Cost of Attendance Sheet to bring to financial aid.
