FAFSA and MASFA
We’re committed to making higher education accessible to all students. Understanding your financial aid options is crucial, and we’re here to guide you through the process. Understanding the difference between the FAFSA and the MASFA is key to applying for financial aid.
The FAFSA is for students who qualify for federal financial aid, while the MASFA is designed for students, including undocumented students, who are ineligible for federal aid but are eligible for state financial aid in Massachusetts. If you’re undocumented, the MASFA is your pathway to accessing state aid for an education at Northern Essex.
You DO NOT NEED to complete both forms.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The FAFSA is the primary form used to determine your eligibility for federal financial aid, including grants, work-study funds, and loans.
FAFSA Requirements
To be eligible for federal financial aid through FAFSA, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen with a valid Social Security number
- Have a high school diploma or GED certificate
- Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a qualifying degree or certificate program
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress while in school
- Not be in default on federal student loans or owe money on a federal grant
FAFSA Deadlines
For the 2024-25 school year, the federal deadline to submit the FAFSA is June 30, 2025. However, we strongly recommend submitting your application as early as possible to maximize your aid opportunities.
