Science Student Receives NECCPA Scholarship
Northern Essex Community College Professional Association (NECCPA) presented its 2012 scholarship award to Lindsey Curole of Merrimac.
NECCPA is the professional staff and faculty union at Northern Essex, the local chapter of the Massachusetts Community College Council (MCCC). The scholarship is presented annually to a promising student nominated by one of the union members.
Curole, a Laboratory Science major, was nominated for the award by Dr. Kevin Mitchell, of the NECC Natural Sciences Department. The paper she submitted as part of the scholarship competition dealt with Electron Ionization Mass Spectrometry.
Lindsey will be transferring to UMass Lowell’s Clinical Lab Science program in the fall. She has volunteered in a lab science high school outreach program and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.
The award for $1000 was presented to her on Monday, April 23.
NECC’s Laboratory Science program trains students for jobs as Lab technicians. Lab techs prepare samples, run tests, troubleshoot and maintain instrumentation, and can also analyze data and communicate findings. Students who complete the Applied Sciences Associate Degree at NECC gain a strong theoretical background in chemistry and the associated sciences, learn technical lab skills and instrumental analysis, and acquire critical thinking and trouble-shooting skills.
