Northern Essex Community College Professional Association (NECCPA) presented its 2013 scholarship award to Vicky Sherwood of Merrimac a Human Services major.

NECCPA is the professional staff and faculty union at Northern Essex, the local chapter of the Massachusetts Community College Council (MCCC). The scholarship is presented annually to a promising student nominated by one of the union members.

Sherwood, a high honors student, graduates in May. She was nominated for the scholarship by NECC Human Services Professor Diane Mele, who wrote, “I have had the opportunity to supervise, instruct, and mentor many students in a variety of academic and clinical professional venues. Based on my interactions with Vicky, I believe she undoubtedly possesses numerous remarkable qualities and skill sets; many of which are essential in a quality human services practitioner.”

When she began the program, Sherwood, a career-changer, brought with her 20 years of experience in customer service and human resources with consistent advancement. She has been an active volunteer throughout her adult life, having worked with the Boy Scouts, local schools, a family shelter, and hospice to name a few.

“I have consistently witnessed her remarkable efforts to achieve excellence in all areas of study within the Department. She sets high standards for herself and is quite committed to, and capable of, reaching her goals. She is a hard-working, insightful and caring individual who has interfaced with classmates and other faculty in an exemplary manner,” wrote Mele.

The award for $1000 was presented to Sherwood last month.

She will transfer to Salem State University to pursue a bachelor’s in social work.

NECC’s offers a Human Service’s Associate of Science degree as well as certificates in Alcohol Drug Abuse Counseling, Community Support and Human Services Practitioner, and Direct Support.
