NECC Screens Documentary on Puerto Rico Post Maria
A documentary that explores the community projects that developed after Hurricane Maria, will be shown Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018, at 4 p.m. in Northern Essex Community College‘s Dr. Ibrahim El-Hefni Allied Health & Technology Center, 414 Common St., Lawrence.
This event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. The film, “Despues de Maria; Las 2 Orillas,” is in Spanish with English subtitles. Sonia Fritz Macias, the filmmaker, will speak following the movie. It is sponsored by NECC’s Lawrence campus and community relations.
Eight months after Hurricane Maria ravaged the island of Puerto Rico, various community projects emerged around the island, including a diner in Las Carolinas, the rescue of fish traps in Naguabo, a hydroponic farm in Lares, as well as the “Catharsis” project by many artists.
The film includes the stories of families who migrated to Orlando and had to separate and family enterprises in Orlando that now help from abroad.
Fritz Macias has directed and produced a number of documentaries including “Mona,” “Treasure of the Caribbean,” and “15 Lighthouses of Puerto Rico.” She co-directed chapters one and two of the PBS series “Latin Americans,” which was a Peabody Award winner. She has directed more than 25 documentaries, on migration, gender, and art & culture.
Born and raised in Mexico City, she now lives in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She earned an MFA from Vermont College at Norwich University and a BA in communications from the National Autonomous University in Mexico.
