Memorial Scholarship Established in Honor of Revered Professor
Three Northern Essex Community College students, Vicki True of Hampstead, N.H., Renee Ouellette of Haverhill, and Joshua Stone of Sandown, N.H. are recipients of the Jack Wysong Memorial Alumni Scholarship, which was recently established in the name of the late Newburyport resident and long-time professor of English and poetry at the college. Each scholarship recipient received $500.
Wysong, who died last August at the age of 72, was a 1956 graduate of Newburyport High School. Following graduation he joined the United States Marine Corp. He enrolled at the fledgling NECC and was a member of its first graduating class. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree and Master of Education degree from the University of Massachusetts. He also attended St. Hilda’s College at Oxford University, Oxford, England. He received his Doctor of Education in 1977 from Northeastern University.
He began his teaching career at NECC after completing his master’s. He was proud to return to the institution that had offered him an opportunity to change the course of his life. During his time at the college he held many positions. He was a professor of English and poetry, head men’s basketball coach, the first director of alumni relations, assistant in the Office of Dean of the College and assistant to the president.
