National Grid Donation Grows NECC Summer STEM Program

Kevin Kelly of National Grid presents Northern Essex Community College President Lane Glenn with a check for $20,000 to support the NECC summer STEM Academy and College for Kids Program.

More than 250 children enrolled in Northern Essex Community College’s Summer STEM Academy and College for Kids program benefited from a recent $20,000 donation by National Grid.

The funding was used to fund the coordinator position as well as STEM supplies for children ages kindergarten through grade 12.

“This funding was critical to the program’s growth,” said Marcy Yeager, coordinator of the STEM Program and College for Kids. “It allowed us to expand the program. It allowed us to free up other grant funds to increase the number of scholarships awarded thus increasing the total K-12 student population served.”

The STEM Academy is a unique program for rising 7th through 10th graders to explore the many exciting areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math for 4 weeks this summer. Students have the opportunity to explore all these academic areas during one summer experience on NECC’s Haverhill campus. They have the chance to meet faculty and students with similar interests while learning about STEM.

College for Kids, which just completed its 20th year at NECC, offers art, exercise, as well as STEM courses to children 7 through 13.
